They’re a little hidden but they’re so fun to watch.

👉 Mom tip: We timed it so we ate lunch beforehand and my son napped on the drive. It worked out perfectly because it left us with about four hours to enjoy the museum, and that’s plenty of time! The museum closes at 5 p.m. but the outdoor exhibits close at 4 p.m. November through March.

🍴 Lunch Plan (if you go earlier)

Eat at: the indoor cafe onsite (or their outdoor one during warm weather!)

👉 If packed lunch: Best spot to sit: Sundial Plaza (upper level) or Siegfried Plaza (lower level)

🎯 Afternoon Activity

Head to: The indoor exhibits

What kids will love: Big League Fun—it’s all baseball themed and perfect for older kids

How long to stay: 2 hours

👉 Energy check: If you’re up for it, you can catch a show at the Alden Planetarium before you go. Tickets are $7 per person for ages 2+. Make sure to check the shows and their times because they vary, so you might actually want to do this earlier in the day.

👜 What to Bring

Water bottles

Snacks

Stroller / wagon

💡 Real Mom Notes

What surprised me: The variety of things the museum has to offer—there’s a little bit for everyone and it works for a wide variety of ages

What I’d do differently: I think I’d start from the top floor and work my way down next time when doing the indoor exhibits. They have a preschool area that is a nice place to let little ones roam free, and I wish we did that first.

Who this is really best for: Kids ages 5-7 Will probably have the most fun

🌧️ Rain / Bad Weather Backup

Because there are plenty of indoor exhibits, this is still worth visiting if the weather is bad. However, if the train is a priority, you might want to reconsider because it is weather dependent.

💸 Realistic Cost Breakdown

Parking: Free

Food: $10-20 per person

Activities: $7-14 per person depending if you do both the train and planetarium

Admission: $18-24 (They are part of the ACM reciprocal network which allows 50% off discounts for museum members, and you can also get library passes from various libraries around MA)

Total: $42-58 per person without discount tickets, under 2 is free

👉 Transparency builds trust fast

🧩 Pair It With Dinner

We ate at Armsby Abbey afterwards, which is a 10 minute drive from the museum. The food was delicious and they had a great kids menu, only downside is they don’t have high chairs or booster seats. They do allow you to bring your own seat in though.

📌 Save This Plan

Copy + paste into your Notes app or come back here later when you need an easy day.

🔁 Want More Easy Plans?

I share new done-for-you weekend plans every week → follow along for your next one.
